Why Pray?

Hi, I’m Emmie I’m really really delighted to be able to share with you today on the topic of prayer.

You know we so appreciate you volunteers and we love partnering with you to have impact in our cities, and we know that prayer is the absolute under-girding of everything that we do, that just leads us on to success in the Lord.

So you know very often the question is asked, “If God is going to do what he’s going to do anyway why do we need to pray?”

And I’ve learned that it has a lot to do with understanding how the system is set up. See in Psalm 115:16 it says, “The heavens, even the heavens belong to the Lord but the earth He has given to the children of men.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 puts it this way, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and I will heal their land.”

You know to me that often answers that question, too, “Why is the world in the state it is in if God is a good God?” And I think the answer really is because we as the people of God haven’t taken on that responsibility that we’ve been given and exercised the dominion that we’ve been given.

Think of it like this. It’s kind of like a W.

It starts with God. It’s His idea and He speaks it by his Spirit to us.

We receive it and we pray it back to him and then He answers that prayer back down to us and then we give him the glory.

It starts with God and it ends with God and he gets all the glory.

Think of prayer like that – like a W.

By the Spirit, we tap into the heart and mind of Christ and we know, “What’s His heart?”; “What’s He brooding?”;  “What’s He want to do?” And he wants us to partner with Him to pray, to speak it out, and then He will do it.

So I encourage you to go and ahead and ask. God is waiting. He wants to answer your prayers, and He is going to act.

Let me pray with you now.

“Father, we thank you so much for your word that is so powerful and that is so instructive to us. Thank You that we get to partner with You in changing our world through prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
