What Does It Mean To Be Spirit-Filled?
TAKE 2 minutes FOR TRAINING
The Spirit-filled life is the abundant life.
You know, there is a story of a man named Yates. He was a sheep farmer back in the time of the depression. He had a lot of land. He had his sheep. He had a very large family, but he had basically run out of money and he was to the point where the bank was ready to foreclose on him.
Just about the time that this was going to take place a drilling team for oil came onto the property and asked Mr. Yates if it would be okay to do some drilling on his property. Mr. Yates had nothing to lose so he said, “Sure, why not? Go ahead.”
Well, they drilled and within a very short time they hit one of the biggest gushers in the history of all of America. In fact, today that gusher is still producing oil.
You see, Mr. Yates was an extremely rich man but he didn’t know that. He didn’t know how to tap into the power that was available to him and he lived as a pauper.
As Christians, we have incredible power available to us. We have the power of the universe, the very power that raised Christ from the dead is available for us to use.
However, we as Christians so often live as spiritual paupers because we do not know how to tap into that power source.
So how can we do it? How can we tap into the power source that the God of the universe, our very Father, makes available to us?
Let’s have a look again at 1 Cor chapter 2 & 3. Here Paul tells us about 3 different kinds of people. There are the people who have not invited Jesus Christ into their life. They are in control of their own lives. God is not on the throne. The 2nd kind of person is the kind of person who knows Jesus Christ in a personal way and God has got control of their lives. There is a 3rd kind of person who has invited Jesus into their life and yet they have not put Jesus on the throne. God is not in control. These are the kind of people who are Christians but they are not tapped into the power source. And they are not experiencing the abundant life.
How can we develop and move from a place of depending on ourselves to a place of depending on the power of the Holy Spirit to give us the abundant life?
Every Christian has two important decisions to make.
The first decision is, we recognize that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for our sins. His sacrifice is sufficient for us to receive and know that we have salvation and we are going to be in heaven with him for all eternity.
Many Christians make that particular decision but there are many who don’t understand there is a second decision – that a point has to come in our lives when we recognize that we are crucified with Christ. We are not our own. We do not belong to ourselves. Christ paid for us and He has the right to be in control of our lives. And at that point, we need to surrender our lives to Christ. We need to recognize that He is God. He is Lord, and that in Him are the plans that He has prepared for us from the very beginning and as we step into that surrender, the plans and the adventure that God has prepared for us begins to unfold.
