What Are You Looking At?

TAKE 2 minutes FOR TRAINING

TAKE2 TRANSCRIPT

It’s easy to get distracted, isn’t it? There are all kinds of enticements that pull at us to upgrade our possessions, our clothing, to focus lots of time on the way we eat, or exercise. There are a lot of pulls on how we spend our time.

My aunt recently went home to heaven. At her memorial service her son was sharing some memories. He said that one of the questions his mom would often ask him when he told her of a decision he was planning was, “What’s your motive?” Sometimes he didn’t like having to defend why he wanted to grow a beard, or buy a new car, but ultimately he did benefit from his mom’s persistent reminder about focus.

My aunt, like Jesus, wanted the focus to be on the Kingdom of God, not on things that come and go, that entice and distract.

I was reading in Luke recently where Luke’s writing about Jesus walking along and people coming to him. In chapter 9, Luke says that Jesus specifically called one person saying, “Come, follow me.” The guy wanted to go back and bury his father and Jesus said, “Anyone who puts a hand to to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

I wrote in the margin of my Bible. “Wow, Jesus often makes me squirm. He is just not one for mediocrity!”

Speaking of plows, there is a old, old story about a farmer who hired a young guy to help him plow one spring. It was back in the days before GPS and obviously the farmer wanted straight rows so he gave the hired man careful instructions. He told him that he was to pick an object on the far side of the field and head straight toward it. He must keep his eye on that object, all the way across the field. When the farmer came back several hours later, he was furious to find that the furrow was so crooked it was almost impossible to follow. But the hired man insisted he had done exactly as he was told. He had kept his eye very keenly on that brown cow that was grazing – just there across the fence, and had never looked at anything else.

I’m sure you, like me, have decisions to make about how you will spend your summer and the things you will commit to next fall.

As we think through those decisions, let’s remember to keep our eyes focused on the Kingdom of God.
