๐ย This spring, a team of widows from Canada travelled once again to Malawi to partner with Hope for Widows Malawi โ a ministry bringing practical support, encouragement, discipleship, and community to widows facing immense hardship.
What they experienced was both heartbreaking and deeply hopeful.
From the moment the team arrived in what is often called โthe warm heart of Africa,โ they were welcomed with kindness, worship, laughter, and deep faith. Throughout the trip, they visited widow groups, encouraged leaders, provided training, listened to stories, and witnessed firsthand the ways God is transforming lives through community and compassion.
Seeing Growth, Hope, and New Dreams
One of the first visits brought the team to Dubvu, where they met with local Hope for Widows leaders and visited two acres of farmland purchased through donor support and local ministry efforts. The maize crop was nearly ready for harvest, and the women eagerly shared stories of how their lives had changed over the past year.
Several women who received โbusiness in a bagโ support last year spoke about the impact it had on their families. One widow shared how selling knitted hats allowed her to pay school fees for her children โ while also caring for four orphans.
But beyond the practical improvements, the team noticed something even more powerful: hope.
One woman described โjoyโ as the biggest emotional change since joining Hope for Widows. Others excitedly shared dreams and plans for the future โ something the team says was a noticeable change from previous visits.
As one team member reflected afterward:
โWe noticed a big change from the first year. They are starting to have big dreams โ and working together to make those dreams happen. Joy and excitement. Thanks be to God.โ
Walking Through Grief Together
Throughout the trip, the team met many women still carrying fresh grief.
One widow had lost her husband only weeks earlier. Another young widow, just 20 years old with a three-year-old child, attended her widow group for the very first time after her husband died in an accident. Tears flowed freely as the women welcomed her into the community.
Again and again, the Canadian team witnessed the tenderness these groups showed one another โ grieving together, worshipping together, and helping each other survive incredibly difficult circumstances.
Many widows shared ongoing struggles with hunger, unsafe housing, and uncertainty about the future. Some wondered how they would repair their homes or provide for their children without their husbands.
Yet even in the middle of hardship, worship remained central.
The women welcomed visitors with joyful singing and dancing, often praising God through music before conversations even began.
One team member shared:
โI loved the joy, enthusiasm, and harmony in all their music.โ
Another reflected:
โSo happy to hear the many testimonies the widows proudly reported since our visit last year, giving glory to God through lively song and dance.โ
Encouragement Goes Both Ways
While the team travelled to encourage widows in Malawi, they quickly realized they themselves were being deeply impacted.
There were moments of laughter during long drives down pothole-filled highways, worship songs sung in multiple languages, tears shared during difficult stories, and deep conversations about faith, perseverance, and community.
The team repeatedly described leaving each widow group encouraged by the faith and resilience of the women they met.
One member reflected:
โWe laughed a lot and cried. I have a deep love for these women who experience such difficult lives. So difficult that I canโt even imagine all the difficulties, even after visiting three times.โ
Another shared:
โIt was great seeing some of the ladies again and hearing them talk about their dreams for the future โ their three and five year dreams for their widow groups.โ
Continuing the Work Together
By the end of the trip, the team had completed ministry with multiple widow groups and were able to leave $6,446 USD toward long-term development projects and emergency relief support through Hope for Widows Malawi โ even after all travel expenses were covered.
Most importantly, relationships were strengthened, encouragement was shared, and the Gospel continued to be proclaimed within these communities.
The team returned home deeply grateful for everyone who prayed, gave financially, and supported the journey.
They ask for continued prayer:
- For unity and care within the widow groups
- For relief from hunger and ongoing financial hardship
- For wisdom as women implement new ideas and business opportunities
- For continued spiritual growth and Gospel ministry within Hope for Widows Malawi
Through every conversation, every song, every prayer, and every act of generosity, God continues to bring hope in the middle of hardship.
And perhaps one of the greatest lessons from the trip is this:
Even in places marked by grief and loss, joy can still grow.
