Free BBQ/Open House to Connect to a Refugee Home

For many refugees, some of the hardest challenges begin after they arrive in Canada.

Far from family and friends, newcomers must navigate a new culture, a new language and a completely unfamiliar way of life, often while trying to rebuild their future from scratch.

Ottawa has some incredible organizations helping refugees find safe housing and access the practical support they need. But there is one essential thing that programs and services alone cannot provide: a genuine sense of belonging.

That is where local churches can make a meaningful difference.

This August, pastors, church leaders and anyone interested in supporting refugees are invited to attend a free BBQ at one of three refugee homes across Ottawa. You’ll some food from the grill, meet some of the people and organizations serving newcomers in our city, and discover practical ways your church can get involved.

You’ll also hear about:

• Adopt-A-Home, a new Connecting Streams initiative that equips church volunteer teams to build consistent, meaningful relationships with residents of local refugee homes

• Open Arms Ottawa and its work helping churches welcome and support newcomers

• Opportunities to partner with Matthew House Ottawa and Samaritan House Ottawa

Whether your church is already involved in refugee ministry, has been looking for a place to begin, or is simply curious to learn more, we would love to have you join us.
