Maybe you are old enough to remember using newspaper as wrapping paper? It was inexpensive and readily available. Compared to the extravagant wrappings of today, the brightly printed gift bags topped with multi coloured tissue paper, newspaper wrap is boring and certainly unappealing.
Regardless of the ugly wrap, the excitement of discovering the surprise in the newspaper was no less than the anticipation of opening a gift today. Could the coronavirus, as ugly and undesirable as it is, be like the newspaper, hiding a desired gift, something special, from Our Heavenly Father?
Could God be inviting us, challenging us to look for the gift He is giving us in the midst of this ugly wrapping called coronavirus? In the midst of the hardship you may have to dig for it. What could that gift possibly be?
Great question! Many people have more time on our hands than ever before. If that’s you, perhaps the Creator of the universe is personally inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him. Has He carved out more time in your day and wants you to spend some of this time with Him?
If you have children at home and/or a spouse, there is an opportunity to deepen your relationships with them. We can get to know each other in ways that the busy schedules, prior to COVID-19, never permitted. We have time to listen and hear more clearly what they need and desperately want from us? I would venture to say the most precious gift we can give them is our time; time to hang out and chat, play games, go for a walk, do a craft, build something, bake cookies …. This opportunity will probably never be offered in our lifetime again. How will we choose to use it?
Or maybe you are one of the people that is busier than ever. FaceTime, Zoom & meeting calls consume your days. What is wrapped in your newspaper gift? How are you going to use it? Maybe the challenge is a call to walk more by faith in absolute trust and surrender. So many things we thought were in our control, are not. Can we be like Peter and step out of the boat?
Is COVID-19 like the newspaper, hiding a precious gift? What has God specifically designed for you during this pandemic time?
1 Thes 5:16-18. Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. You may be familiar with the old saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. Here is your gift, wrapped in newspaper. Open it with childlike faith and anticipation.
I by no means want to negate the pain, grief and anguish this virus is causing. However, fellow Christians, let’s keep our eyes on our Savior, Jesus. He is still on the throne. I pray that each one of you may be blessed and draw closer to our Lord.
God Bless you
