You Know Better Now

Written by Donna Mitchell for The Life

“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.”– 1 PETER 1:14

Last night our grandson had a few meltdowns. At two and a half, he is convinced he knows best and he wants what he wants when he wants it! On our watch, we’ve tried to protect him and care for him in the best way possible. Many times we have to say no for his own protection. How much more does our Heavenly Father love and care for us in the best way possible! We are God’s children. He knows what is best for us, what will hurt us, what we will regret if we get our way when we want it.I remember I could hardly wait to be twenty-one so I could finally be able to do what I wanted. I couldn;t wait to grow up so that people will stop telling me what to do.

Once we grow up we think we know better. We want to do our own thing, make our own decisions, satisfy our own desires.

Obedience is not age specific. Peter admonishes us that we should live as God’s obedient children. We will always be children in his eyes. We go backwards in life when we “slip back” into our old ways of living for ourselves first. Living for self leads us into all kinds of bondage and pain. Living as obedient children of God leads to true freedom, joy, love, and a life that satisfies our deepest needs.

We have a heavenly calling and the only way to live it out is to be God’s obedient children.

Our Father, thank you for rescuing me from my empty way of life that concentrates on satisfying our own desires. I believe you know what is best for me. Give me an undivided heart to follow and obey you wholeheartedly, which will enable me to live out your plan for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Go Deeper — Are you in danger of slipping back into your old ways? Ask the Lord to search your heart and bring you into alignment with His will.
