A Red Letter Community

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” ( Matthew 7:24-25)

How do you define Church? Primarily, the world defines church as a religious building. Conversely, the Christ follower usually defines church as a living collective body of believers. Jesus defines church as “…everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice.” Paul defines church as, “…in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (Rom 12:5)

As believers, how do we devote ourselves to being functional, contributing members of the Church? Essentially, we obey His word and emulate His model by stepping outside the confines and comfort of our church building and devoting ourselves to community outreach.

In Matthew 25:40, Jesus equates intentional community outreach with how we treat Him: “… whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Neglecting our inherent purpose as living members of His body breeds calamitous consequence: inevitably, we become stagnant and ineffective, spiritually and contagiously paralyzing our church and community. However, a “red letter community”– one that faithfully follows Jesus’ words – is a community He empowers to transform the world.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the church. Help me to be a faithful functional member of Your body. Help me to reflect You in my church and community. Open up opportunities to serve and prepare my heart to follow.

Action Step

Using a red-letter edition Bible, reflect on Matthew 25:31-46, and then immerse yourself in more words of Jesus in the Gospels this week. Consider joining a community outreach team.

This devotional is really so right on and powerful; especially in light of our conversations at the training event about boldly representing Jesus and His work and message of the Gospel with those we visit. I was empowered that day and this devotional supports my sense of confidence in the Holy Spirit’s work in me and the lives of those I minister to.
    Thanks so much.
