Connecting Streams: Finding Strength

An outreach team met with women in the secure unit of a local prison. One particular inmate consistently demonstrated her obvious agitation – making fun, interrupting, causing disturbance. Her behavior discouraged the team, making it hard to endure. She stopped attending, then a few months later, she returned with a story.

While she was alone in her cell God met her. She poured out her heart to the Savior – the Savior she didn’t want to admit she needed. She regretted her behavior and repented – to the Lord and to the team she disrespected with her comments.

They were stunned. They had persevered in the midst of the opposition not knowing that the Lord was working and drawing this woman to Himself. The Scriptures she mocked penetrated her heart. There were eternal consequences to pushing through.

What the enemy uses against us to bring discouragement or deter our course, God can use to make us strong, mature, and immovable. He can use it to make our character more like Jesus.  (Read full devotional here)

As you reflect on the contents of this month’s newsletter ask yourself:  In what ways do you need to be strengthened?

Verse of the Month

“We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.” (Colossians 1:11-12, NLT)

Connecting Streams Volunteer Training Event a Success!

Connecting Streams held a Volunteer Training Event on March 16th in Sherwood Park:  ‘Reaching the Least of These’.  If you missed the event please  review and share the highlights from the main session with Rob C. Thiessen.

Loved how Rob said that the gospel is love, not some “formula”.  The results aren’t up to us, that’s God’s job.  Our responsibility is to show up and love & listen.   How it takes months to build trust.  How important it is to listen, and not be quick to speak or give advice, just listening is a form of respect.

I guess he just confirmed what I already knew, but it is very  encouraging to be reminded from somebody who is in the trenches.   When I am reminded, it seems to “simplify” it for me, and make me think again: ”I can do this”  I loved his story about how people coming to work in the program have come to faith in Christ, not just the “clients”.    How God’s plan is so much bigger and  more encompassing than ours, and how He blesses above and beyond.

– Quote from Deanna, participant of the training event.

Listen

An anonymous poem shared by Rob Thiessen at the Volunteer Training Event.

When I ask you to listen to me

…and you start giving advice

…you have not done what I asked.

When I ask you to listen to me

…and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel that way;

…you are trampling on my feelings.

When I ask you to listen to me

…and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem,

…you have failed me, strange as that may seem.
