Energy Investment by Cath Thorlakson

Read Luke 12:15 – 34

“Only aim at and strive for and seek His kingdom, and all these things shall be supplied to you also.”

Luke 12:31

I have worked in ministry positions that have not contributed well financially almost my entire adult life.  As a result, we are at an age where most of our contemporaries own homes and we do not.  It is very tempting to worry about the future.

Today’s verses speak directly to my fears.  Jesus instructed His disciples to keep it materially simple, but also not to worry.  According to Jesus’ words, there is absolutely nothing to worry about or be distracted by.  In fact, verse 15 speaks sternly to this kind of energy placement.

What do you make of verse 33 that suggests that we should sell all that we have and give to the poor?  How do we ensure that we are keeping our heart fixed on a treasure that will last forever?

For all of us, the key is where we focus.  Whether I have much or nothing, the answer is the same.  Give what you can, and focus your energy on building our Father’s heavenly kingdom, and not our personal wealth on earth.

What do you need to do in response to these words?  Make an adjustment in attitude?  Choose a new place or way to deposit your energy?  Allow a shift in focus?  Or do you need to begin, or increase, your material gifts to the poor?

In light of these verses, how do we obey God today?
